Frequently Asked Questions

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are the healthy or “good” bacteria that co-exist with “bad” bacteria in all bodies. The word comes from Latin, “pro” meaning “for” and “biotic” meaning “life”. So essentially, they are “for life”. Many things, including poor diet, stress, and antibiotics may disrupt the normally healthy balance of “good” vs. “bad” bacteria in our intestinal tracts. When there are too many “bad” bacteria, illness and disease may develop. Probiotics are an essential part of any healthy diet.

Can I use colonics to prepare for a colonoscopy?

Colon hydrotherapy is an effective means of cleansing the colon to prepare for colonoscopies and other medical procedures. Colonoscopies are the number one defense against colon cancer, yet many people avoid them because of the horror stories about the preparation. A colonic is more pleasant and tolerable than traditional preparations that require drinking unpleasant chemical formulas, which cause diarrhea, and sometimes a sleepless night. In fact, Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut recently started using colon hydrotherapy to prepare their patients for medical procedures.

I only recently heard about colonics. Are they something new?

No, colon cleansing was popular in ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Hindu, Greek, and Roman cultures.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, J.H. Kellogg, M.D., (of Kellogg’s cereal fame,) a skilled physician and surgeon, was responsible for popularizing colon hydrotherapy. He reported in 1917 in the Journal of the American Medical Association that he was able to successfully treat all but 20 of 40,000 gastrointestinal patients using only diet, exercise, and enemas—no surgery.

After almost a century of modern medicine’s reliance on pills, surgery, and other quick-fixes, many people are returning to more natural paths to wellness. Interest in and demand for colon hydrotherapy is rapidly increasing.

How many colonics do I need to have?

That varies from person to person, though we recommend beginning with a series. The more you hydrate the bowel, the more it will release. It is recommended that your second colonic be soon after the first. After you have the first colonic, your liver may dump toxins into your colon that have been backed up because of poor intestinal elimination. The second colonic will help facilitate more rapid detoxification.

How does a colon hydrotherapy treatment compare to an enema?

An enema reaches only the rectum and lower part of the colon, whereas colon hydrotherapy reaches the entire length of the colon and is many times more effective. According to learned centenarian Dr. Norman Walker, “One colon irrigation is equivalent to 30 enemas.”

Do the treatments hurt?

No. In fact, many people report their colon hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing. In our office, we play soothing music and dim the lights to enhance relaxation.

How much of the intestines are cleansed during a colonic treatment?

It is possible to cleanse the entire length of the colon during a professionally-administered session. The small intestine is not specifically involved; however the small intestine my be cleansed with the help of an oral intestinal cleanser and a with a fruit- and veggie-based diet.

Are there any contraindications to colon hydrotherapy?

If you are concerned about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy for you, you should consult your physician or licensed healthcare practitioner.

Contraindications for the use of the Angel of Water include, but may not be limited to: recent colon, rectal, or abdominal surgery, congestive heart failure, intestinal perforations, carcinoma of the rectum, fissures or fistula, severe hemorrhoids, abdominal hernia, renal insufficiency, first or last trimester of pregnancy, and cirrhosis of the liver. Professionally-administered colon hydrotherapy is otherwise very safe.

Is there any possibility of bacterial or viral contamination from prior use of the colon hydrotherapy equipment?

The Angel of Water system uses single-use, sterile rectal nozzles. The use of sterile disposables coupled with the implementation of the Angel of Water’s multi-stage sanitation protocol leaves no danger of contamination.

Does having a menstrual period at the time of a colon hydrotherapy session have any effect on the experience?

No. Some consider it a good time to have a session since your body is already cleansing. Your flow will not interfere with the success of the session. However, some women prefer to wait until after their period is over to do a colonic.

What should I do to prepare for a colon hydrotherapy cleansing?

Refrain from eating about 2 hours before the cleansing, be as relaxed as possible, and maintain a positive, cheerful attitude.

How could colonics help people with weight loss?

By improving metabolism, liver functioning and curbing cravings.
